Nathanael Potts first discovered his passion for engineering when he joined his school’s Greenpower team which enabled pupils to build electric single seaters that they were also able to race at tracks across the country.

“From there I knew it was a career I wanted to pursue further,” he said.

His interest in Motorsport Engineering piqued further when he visited a University open day and saw the facilities and resources available to students.

“This completely won me over. From there I was set on studying at UWTSD and making the most of my experience as a student,” he said.

“My aims and ambitions were and still are to strive in a career/industry to  push innovation forward and be the best engineer I can be developing new and innovative designs.”

Nathanael said he was two key highlights from his time at UWTSD.

“The first was having the opportunity to work with an external race team developing the aerodynamics of the car to optimise the performance. After a year of working on the car, a few upgrades that I have designed are now on the car with a couple still in the pipeline to be manufactured,” he said.

“The second was having the opportunity to do some additional aerodynamic analysis for Morgan Motors and a tour round their factory. This gave me great insight into the automotive industry and how the company operates.”

Nathanael said he would recommend this course to anyone interested in motorsport engineering.

“The hands-on experience you get throughout the course is amazing as well as being given the opportunity to develop new skills on a number of industry leading software. Also, the support you get from lecturers is second to none.”

Nathanael said the course has helped with confidence in his particular field to go out and support race teams develop their car on track.

“I now want to undertake one more year to get a master’s degree to firm my knowledge and understanding that bit more to set me up to go into industry,” he added.

Tim Tudor, UWTSD’s Programme Director BEng Motorsport Engineering said: “Nathanael has been conducting some exciting aerodynamics projects both on Motorsport and Automotive applications. He has been dedicated to his studies and it’s been great to see him grow as an engineer through the course and projects. Well done Nathanael!”
