Noreen’s journey, which began after her daughter’s hospital treatment, exemplifies the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of education.

While staying at the hospital with her daughter, who sadly passed away, Noreen became captivated by the nursing profession. Encouraged by a registrar and nursing team who recognised her aptitude and passion, she decided to pursue a career in nursing. This led her to enrol in a Health and Social Care course at UWTSD Birmingham, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

Noreen said: “My aim and ambition was to complete my course and walk away with a degree. The highlight of the course is I’m walking away with great knowledge and many good friends, not forgetting the memories. I’ve learnt different ways of researching techniques and I’m now ready to continue my learning journey to take me to the next stage of my chosen career.”

However, the journey was not without its trials. During her final year of study, Noreen was diagnosed with cancer and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Despite these daunting obstacles, she remained steadfast in her commitment to her education. Her perseverance paid off, and she is proudly graduating with a first-class honours degree.

“The challenge I faced during my last year of study was immense, but I still walked away with a first. I would recommend this course to friends and family. I enjoyed doing it and I would love to pass my happiness to other people,” she said.

Noreen is eager to continue her journey in the healthcare field. Her future goal is to undergo hospital training, where she hopes to apply her knowledge and skills to make a difference in the lives of others.

John Deane, Dean of UWTSD’s Birmingham campus said : “Noreen’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of education and the indomitable spirit of those who pursue their dreams against all odds. She stands as an inspiration to her peers, her family, and her community, embodying the true essence of dedication and resilience.”
