Second-year BA Graphic Design student, Katie Rees, has landed an exciting role as a freelance photographer with the Scarlets. It marks a significant milestone in Katie’s learning journey with the University, showcasing her dedication, talent, and passion for the creative arts.

Influenced by her artistic family, Katie developed a love for photography during her GCSEs and further honed her skills through A Levels in Photography, Graphics, and Textiles. Despite initial reservations about university, the pandemic prompted her to pursue a Foundation Art and Design course at UWTSD, which she loved. Her path then led her to Graphic Design at UWTSD, where she has thrived.

Katie said: “I’ve always had a strong creative influence from my family and a love for photography that began in my school years. My time at UWTSD has been transformative, and securing this role with the Scarlets is a dream come true. It has reignited my passion for photography and given me immense confidence in my skills.”

Katie’s role at the Scarlets involves capturing promotional images for the team’s hospitality suites and boxes. Her success in this role has already opened further opportunities, demonstrating the real-world applicability of the skills she has gained through her course.

Katie says she initially struggled with confidence but found tremendous support from her lecturers and peers, especially during her pregnancy and after becoming a new mother.

“The support from the staff has been incredible,” she said. “It has made a huge difference in my confidence and my ability to succeed.”

In addition to her coursework, Katie actively engages in extra opportunities to enhance her skills. “I aim to soak up every moment of this course,” she said. “Design Week 2024 was a highlight, providing valuable industry insights and inspiration. I’m committed to continuing this engagement throughout my final year.”

Donna Williams Programme manager for BA Graphic Design said “The core focus of the teaching in the BA Graphic Design program is to cultivate and apply the diverse creative skills and passion of each individual student. Katie, who has a strong affinity for photography, effectively combines this skill with her keen eye for graphic design. We are delighted that Katie demonstrated initiative by applying for the freelance position with Scarlets, especially considering her recent journey into motherhood, which demonstrates her strong determination and dedication to achieving her goals. Well done Katie!”

Caroline Thraves, Academic Director Art & Media added: “Our BA Graphic Design Course at Swansea College of Art (UWTSD) provides students with so many fantastic live industry projects, internships and opportunities to gain employment in the design sector. We are delighted Katie has been given this opportunity with the Scarlets, we know she will be an asset to them.”

Kathryn Gardner, Scarlets Commercial Co-ordinator said: “It has been great to work with Katie to showcase our award-winning hospitality here at Parc y Scarlets and bring the match-day experience to life through her photography. Her work has also been part of our season membership campaign with her images on posters and billboards across the region.”
