Swansea’s Got Textiles Talent
At the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, (UWTSD) we’re celebrating the fantastic work that happens in Textiles Departments across South Wales in a collaborative exhibition.
Swansea’s Got Textiles Talent brings together teachers and specialists to share great practice, skills, and knowledge, showcasing the brilliant opportunities there are for careers in Textiles and the wider Surface Pattern field.
The Event will consist of a curated Exhibition of Secondary Level Schools and College students’ fantastic work, alongside opportunities to tour the department, engage with current and past students, and will culminate in a Prize Giving Ceremony hosted by guest judge, S4C’s Huw Rees and filmed by Tinopolis.
Programme Director Georgia McKie said: “We will be championing future creatives beyond their classrooms, and giving students a unique opportunity to look ahead if they choose to continue studying Textiles and Surface Pattern at HE.
“We are exhibiting and celebrating a selection of student work, giving them a unique insight into what could lay ahead. We are showcasing contributions from graduates of Surface Pattern & Textiles, so participants can see where the energy and attributes detailed in our awards categories has led them in their lives and careers.”
The University will welcome pupils from Morriston and Bishop Gore Comprehensives, Coleg Gwent, St Clare’s Porthcawl, Ysgol Gyfun Bryntawe, Dylan Thomas and Ysgol Dyffryn Aman schools to UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art this week.
The event also aligns closely with the Craft Hub EU global touring exhibition which features a number of alumnae and their work.
In addition, the exhibition celebrates Cwilt200 and exhibits the final piece on campus for the first time. This project is a culmination of a collaboration between many schools and colleges partners and our own Surface Pattern and Textiles students.
The exhibition is open until 28th September and we welcome schools and colleges groups, and teachers and tutors to visit. Contact the team to organise a tour of the department and the potential for a taster workshop.

“BA Surface Pattern and Textiles at Swansea College of Art, UWTSD was ranked in the Guardian League Table 2023 as 3rd in the UK for Fashion and Textile and 1st in Wales. We are sector leading and we want to be able to share this knowledge and experience to help inform young people on their creative journey”.
Swansea College of Art alumnae hosting workshops and exhibiting as part of the Craft Hub EU project and global touring exhibition include:
Naomi Seaward – MDes alumna, she has made a significant contribution to the Material Library and the Craft Hub Project. Her diverse, multidisciplinary surface pattern and textiles work is exhibited at the Dylan Thomas Centre.
Angela Maddock BA and MA alumna, and former Senior Lecturer in Swnasea College of Art, she is a SCA Honorary Research Fellow and is running a Craft Hub Repair and Quilting workshop in the SP&T dept on 15/9/23
Sian Lester – MA alumna, is running a Wild Colour Natural Dye Craft Hub workshop in the SP&T dept on 15/9/23
Harriet Popham – BA alumna, is running a Lino Print and Pattern Craft Hub workshop in the SP&T dept on 15/9/23
Safiyyah Altaf and Isabel Porch – Safi is a continuing Surface Pattern and Textiles Master of Design student, and Isabel graduated with BA(Hons) Surface Pattern and Textiles in the summer – they are running a Print and Pattern workshop in the Quadrant over the Festival period.
