Postgraduate students from the Professional Doctorate in Art and Design and MA Art and Design programmes at UWTSD will be undertaking a ground-breaking research project in Paris next month (December) to explore new methods of data collection and gain a deeper understanding of contemporary audiences’ lifestyles and experiences.

The students will be conducting a series of research projects across Paris, employing innovative methodologies to collect data and examine how individuals interact with and perceive the world around them. One captivating case study will involve fieldwork using Rhythmanalysis, a unique approach to studying the historic area of Le Marais. By analysing the rhythms and patterns of everyday life through film, sound, photography, sketches etc, the students hope to uncover fresh insights into the cultural fabric of this iconic district.

Additionally, the students will utilise mobile technology to investigate how data gathered from various applications can be effectively utilised to enhance designers’ understanding of customer habits. By delving into the vast pool of information available through apps, this project aims to revolutionise the way designers connect with their target audiences.

The culmination of this research will be a conference and exhibition scheduled to take place in August at the University’s Swansea College of Art. The conference and exhibition will showcase the students’ findings, providing a platform for sharing their exciting discoveries and innovative methodologies with the wider academic and artistic communities.

Timi O’Neill, programme manager of the Doctorate in Art and Design, and MA Art and Design at UWTSD, Swansea College of Art said: “This research field trip to Paris represents a unique opportunity for our postgraduate students to push the boundaries of knowledge in art and design. By applying novel research methods and exploring cutting-edge technologies, we aim to pave the way for new insights and creative possibilities. We are excited to share these findings with the public through our exhibition, which will undoubtedly inspire and provoke meaningful discussions. Our aim is to get our students ready for the future as it promises to be a challenging one.

Dr Mark Cocks, Interim Dean of the Wales Institute for Art and Science said: “My congratulations go out to the students and staff that have inspired this innovative research project. The dynamic academic environment of the Professional Doctorate in Art and Design and MA Art and Design programmes is providing a collaborative approach to gathering and sharing knowledge of contemporary lifestyles. We’re looking forward to hearing how their expedition to Paris further extends the community boundaries of this exciting project.”

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is committed to supporting research initiatives that advance understanding and contribute to the global art and design community. This project not only demonstrates the university’s dedication to fostering innovation but also highlights the exceptional talent and expertise of its home and international postgraduate students.
