Yr Egin working with Cwmni Theatr Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli to stage 'Anni'.

Yr Egin has been working together as a partner with Cwmni Theatr Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli for a year now in order to re-establish the youth theatre post-covid and nurture future talent. This partnership has been extremely successful with Yr Egin sharing expertise, transferring skills, and providing digital and technical opportunities for the young people of Carmarthenshire. 

Yr Egin is responsible for ensuring that the show’s technical requirements are met, and as a result of this has provided two young people who are members of the theatre company with the opportunity to develop their skills with the professional technician, James O’Neill. This has been a training opportunity and has identified valuable career pathways for the young people in a field that is crying out for more talent to become technicians. 

Llinos Jones, Yr Egin’s Engagement Manager has also been attending the rehearsals weekly, holding performance workshops and providing production support.

As a result of this partnership, Sam Measor, a BA Set Design and Production student at the University has had the opportunity to create a special puppet for the show. Sam was briefed to design a puppet of Anni’s famous dog Sandy for the production. She said:

“I loved creating Sandy the dog for the show ‘Anni’. It was a great opportunity for me to develop my skills and work on a professional project. I am very excited to see the final puppet on stage.”

This opportunity has meant that Sam has responded to the client’s requirements within a time and budget framework and has done so successfully.

It has been a pleasure working with Sam and Yr Egin. Sam is very talented and has created a puppet that will complete our performances of the musical ‘Anni’. I hope this will open doors and create opportunities to work in partnership with Yr Egin and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David to showcase the talent of the young people living in Carmarthenshire.”

In addition, this opportunity has introduced Sam to the area’s Welsh culture and showed her that there is a demand for high quality creative work locally. Llinos Jones, Engagement Manager for Canolfan S4C Yr Egin added:

“It has been a pleasure to see the fruits of our partnership with the Menter grow over the past year. So many young people receiving professional support and input into their experience which will hopefully inspire them about the opportunities available regionally in this field.  Providing an opportunity for a student studying at the university to create and collaborate with Theatr Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli is an example of this collaboration and Sam has created a first class puppet that reflects the standard of the University course. Offering opportunities for students to engage with the community in Carmarthenshire is very important to us at Yr Egin, and integrating the Welsh-speaking community into the lives of the students is extremely valuable.”

• 3rd July at Glenalla Hall, Llanelli; 
• 5th July at Pontyberem Memorial Hall;
• 12th July at Canolfan S4C Yr Egin.
