The programme is delivered through weekly live online teaching sessions.

There is an emphasis on developing skills necessary for project management in the heritage industry.

This Pathway offers funded apprenticeships for those already working in the industry.

What you will learn

This MA has been developed for archaeological practitioners in the sector who are or will be responsible for preparing archaeological reports, making judgments and managing a team. It is designed specifically to allow these apprentices to analyse and prepare project briefs, specifications, and reports. This is embedded within a theoretical framework appropriate to current archaeological interpretation, and the skills to present the archaeological material in a variety of media to diverse audiences from the general public to academic publications.

In Part One, each module is worth 30 credits. 

In Part Two, students are given the opportunity to research in detail a topic which has particularly appealed to them and write an extended dissertation (for 60 credits). Students will be allocated a supervisor to help guide them through their dissertations.

  • Applicants must be currently employed in the heritage sector in England with 2 years’ experience to be eligible. Applicants are expected to have a first degree, although every application is considered in its own merit, so places may be offered on the basis of professional qualifications and relevant experience.

  • The modules are assessed by a variety of assessment methods: reports, essays, short assignments, oral assessments and one 15000-word dissertation.

  • The apprentice will need standard IT equipment to take part in teaching sessions and to prepare assignments.

  • The fees for the programme are covered by the Apprenticeship Levy (100% for large employers, 95% for SMEs).
