Background

During a 20 year career as a Secondary School teacher, Alison undertook many roles such as Head of Department (Business Studies), KS2/KS3 Transition Co-ordinator and Teacher Governor. During that time, Alison also enjoyed an active role as a mentor for PGCE students and as an external marker for GCSE and Advanced Level examinations and coursework.

She was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in ITE in 2014, leading the PGCE Business Studies course.  Since then, Alison has enjoyed being a module lead for various PGCE modules and is currently leading a Research module for BA Primary students. Since then, Alison has taken up the position of Programme Director for the National MA (Ed) provision at UWTSD as well as gaining experience of leading various modules for BA (Ed), PGCE, MA, and EdD courses. Additionally, Alison led the Admissions team for PGCE courses for five years before taking up the post of Strategic Lead for Curriculum and Pedagogy in the Athrofa. This role spanned a period of significant pedagogical changes during Covid-19, and Alison facilitated many initiatives to ensure that students had the best possible experiences.

Alison has also undertaken External Examiner duties in Initial Teacher Education at the University of the West of England, Bristol (2018–2022) and is currently an external examiner for the University of Dundee. These roles have provided a valuable insight into practices at other institutions, as well as expanding her professional network. 

Alison’s Doctoral thesis sought to understand the experiences and perceptions of adolescent participants with regard to the opportunities and barriers faced in developing the specific skills of resilience and problem-solving within family, school, and community settings using a participatory research framework.
