UWTSD Energy and Environmental Engineering graduate Nye Evans hopes his knowledge and skills can help tackle some of the challenges related to the development of cleaner technologies, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental conservation efforts.

He said: “We so often see Net zero targets and sustainability pledges and in order to achieve those targets we need environmental engineers innovating and optimising processes in order to reduce emissions and make them more efficient.

“My aims and ambitions undertaking this course was to learn lots of useful relevant and employable knowledge and skills to better myself and make a difference in the industry. I also wanted to make my family proud and prove to myself that I could do it.”

Nye said one of the highlights of the course was working together in groups on difficult tasks and trusting in their collaborative skills to produce a good outcome.

“Another was a course trip to Machynlleth where we visited the Centre for Alternative Technology and learned a vast amount about early and developing methods and technologies we may see more of in the energy sector.”

Nye’s dissertation looked into energy efficiencies and management processes within a university and involved working closely with internal university departments.

“This was very enjoyable and gave me a taste of real-world work and what I could be doing in the future,” he said.

“I have certainly developed and gained skills which I am grateful for personally from the course and university. I have improved my engineering knowledge enough to be considered for jobs in industry.

“There have also been good external opportunities to earn certification and awards to help with employability and personal progression such as MOS and VR Drone Rotor piloting.

“My plans now are job hunting, where I am hoping to get a satisfying job with progression and one I can enjoy going into every day.”

Kelvin Lake, senior lecturer at UWTSD said: “Nye’s time at UWTSD was heavily disrupted by COVID (as was the time of all the students graduating this year), however despite this, he has demonstrated his passion for the Energy and Environmental sectors and is sucessfully graduating this year which will secure his future in these areas.  This culminated in him looking at “Energy, Carbon Reduction & Management Strategies at UWTSD Carmarthen” for his final year dissertation which will benefit both him and the University.”
