The invitation was extended to UWTSD by the Welsh Government because of the success of the SMART Digital Accelerator project, which is funded by Welsh Government and aims to support manufacturers in Wales in their digitalisation journey.

The IOTSWC is the leading event on trends in digital transformation and disruptive technologies. The congress aims to create a roadmap to navigate the opportunities and risks, and to help organisations focus on the technologies that have the greatest business impact.

The congress is dedicated to creating a dialogue between leaders who are driving powerful digital innovation initiatives and transforming industries.

Representatives from UWTSD’s SMART Digital Accelerator project, including Richard Morgan, Lisa Lucas, Simon Thomas, and Raoul Chappell, will be in attendance, as well as representatives from Welsh manufacturers Probe RTS, Morgan Advanced Materials, and Safran Seats, all of whom are successfully benefiting from the project.

The delegation is led by Welsh Government’s Gwion Williams (Operations Manager) and Peter Williams (Technical Relationships Manager). The aim is to showcase the best of Wales’s innovative industry-changing projects and seek out new relationships and technologies that can provide solutions to challenges both in Wales and worldwide. The delegation is especially interested in emerging technologies and knowledge transfer opportunities.

The delegation’s itinerary includes visits to centres and hubs of excellence in Additive Manufacturing, 3D Printing, Digital Industry, Robotics, as well as multiple networking opportunities.

Gary Clifford, Executive Director of Commercialisation and Jo Walker, Project Manager from the INSPIRE team will join the congress later in the week, seeking new business relationships that will work with UWTSD to build on their already strong international business presence.

Gary Clifford said: “As Head of INSPIRE, a team responsible for Research, Commercialisation, Enterprise, and Civic Engagement at UWTSD, this global event presents a remarkable opportunity for the university to network and connect with like-minded individuals and organisations. I am eager to share our expertise and learn from others as we continue to grow and expand our partnerships to bring collaborative and impactful projects to life. This event represents a defining moment for Wales’s place in the global tech industry, and we are excited to be a part of it.”

Barry Liles, OBE Pro Vice Chancellor Skills, and Lifelong Learning at UWTSD said: “We are incredibly proud to have been invited as part of a delegation attending the IOT Solutions World Congress in Barcelona. This invitation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and the strong partnerships we have established with the Welsh Government and Welsh businesses. At UWTSD, we are fully committed to Wales’s role as a leader in digitalisation and technology adoption and see this Congress as a tremendous opportunity to showcase our cutting-edge projects and build new relationships that will drive innovation and growth.”

UWTSD’s Director of Digital Services, James Cale and Executive Head of Digital Creativity and Learning, Chris Rees, will also be in Barcelona attending both the Congress and the wider Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2023 conference held at the same venue. The conference presents a unique platform to delve into cutting-edge advancements and trends in digital technologies, fostering valuable connections and exchanging insights with industry experts, academics, and peers to continue the university’s digital transformational work. Geraint Flowers, Executive Head of UWTSD’s Capital Projects, will attend to evaluate how the University will incorporate future technologies into its infrastructure.
