Balancing passions: from rugby pitch to classroom success
Receiving an Extra-Curricular Activities Bursary, BA Primary Education with QTS student Morgan Thomas, celebrates a double achievement at his graduation this week. Throughout his time at UWTSD, he has balanced his passion for teaching with a love for rugby, making him a standout student on and off the field.
Inspired by a long family history of educators, it was no surprise that Morgan chose to follow his early ambition of becoming a teacher. After recommendations from teaching professionals and conversations with the lecturing staff, Morgan said: “I knew that attending UWTSD would give me the opportunity to be the best teacher I could be.”
Morgan is an avid rugby player having played at age grade and club levels and currently for Neath RFC and Neath Athletic RFC. When he was presented with the opportunity to join UWTSD’s Academy of Sport alongside his studies, he was eager to dive in, combining his two passions.
During the three years at UWTSD, he juggled his studies with rugby commitments, making full use of the University’s resources like the library, gym, and the support from lecturing staff and coaches.
“It was definitely challenging at times, especially towards the end, but the support here made all the difference,” Morgan reflects.
One of the highlights of Morgan’s course was the teaching placements. He completed three placements in various primary schools and had a unique stint at St Fagans National Museum where he explored how they engage with the Curriculum for Wales and offered insights on improvement.
He said: “Meeting amazing people, teaching brilliant kids, and honing my teaching skills during these placements was unforgettable.”
Morgan’s research into teaching practices also played a crucial role in shaping his teaching style, making him more confident and innovative in the classroom. Despite the hurdles, Morgan managed to keep everything in balance, thanks to the vibrant community at UWTSD and his close-knit group of friends made through both his course and the rugby team.
Nominated by his lecturers, Morgan is awarded the Extra-Curricular Activities Bursary at his graduation for his leading role in the performance of the University’s rugby team over the course of his three years here. He led the squad to a number of triumphs as captain during his third year resulting in him being awarded the Academy of Sport’s Student of the Year.
Looking ahead, he plans to complete his Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year and dreams of teaching abroad, in the Middle East or Canada. Meanwhile, he’s eager to continue his rugby journey in the Welsh Premiership.
Morgan’s story is a perfect example of how this University allows and encourages blending passions. UWTSD has shaped him into a skilled teacher but also a dedicated athlete.
