The University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts (WAVDA) BMus Vocal Performance students are taking flight this May with their travel-worthy performance, and preparing to take flight to the Emerald City.

Working with professional director, Sarah Crisp, they will transport audiences to a world where time seems to stand still, and through a series of captivating songs and ensembles drawn from the realms of opera, musical theatre, and film, the BMus Vocal Performance students tell stories that resonate with audiences of all ages.

They are taking this fun-filled performance on tour to schools across Wales including Bishopston Primary School, The Maelor School and Pembrokeshire College. In addition to a performance of the show, they will also conduct workshops based around the production for various different age groups in the schools. The workshops have been designed with the hope of engaging students in singing and introducing them to a range of different musical styles in performance.

Sarah Crisp, Director, said:

I wanted to link the various musical pieces with a loose narrative, so the students could explore developing characters and creating their own dramatic arc within the piece. I have loved working in a collaborative way with students contributing to costume ideas, choreography, props and set dressing. Sometimes it’s possible to go on a journey without your feet ever leaving the ground”

Sinead D’Abreu-Hayling, BMus Level 6 Student said:

“This project has stretched me so much musically. I’m not just doing opera arias like I am used to, but a variety of genres. It has been very challenging but also very enriching to my singing experience. Being part of this project will also help me when I go on to do my Masters Degree in Performance because it has given me the skills I need to progress in my career.”

Academy Director, David Bebbington added:

“This project has brought together all the learning from the past 3 years of the BMus Vocal Performance degree for our students creating opportunities to work in various contexts, including performance and workshop delivery, as well as arts and stage management which are all elements they are likely to encounter within their professional careers. We are lucky to have Sarah Crisp with us on the project as she brings a wealth of professional experience as a Director and Assistant Director at Welsh National Opera and Opera North. I will also be out on tour with this production as musical director, and I am very much looking forward to seeing it through our performances in Pembrokeshire, Swansea, Wrexham and Flintshire.”
