Congratulations to Michael Thomas, who has graduated with a first-class BA (Hons) in International Business Administration Degree from UWTSD Birmingham, marking another significant chapter in his learning journey and career.

A smiling and proud Michael Thomas dressed in his cap and gown at his graduation ceremony.

With a passion for supporting young people, Michael is a senior pastoral care leader, working with students aged 11-16 and credits the University for giving him the skills and knowledge needed for this role and others. He is also a student mentor at the University and has launched a coaching and mentoring business.

He said: “My role as a senior pastoral care leader is incredibly rewarding. I oversee everything from behavior and attendance to safeguarding and day-to-day issues. Being a first point of contact for families and social services is a big part of the role, so effective communication is key.

“Before that, I worked as an ESOL/ESL tutor overseas. From 2013 to 2017, I was in Turkey, and then from 2017 to 2019, I had the amazing experience of working in Saudi Arabia. It was an incredible time, teaching all ages and creating lessons.”

Michael said that returning to education in the UK felt like a ‘homecoming.’

“UWTSD caught my eye because I am extremely interested in management and leadership, and I would like to start a leadership role in an education establishment. I am excited to combine my experience with fresh knowledge and keep making a positive impact on young lives and others who want to reach their potential in life.

“It is a fire I have always felt burning within – a desire to make a real impact, not just guide, but empower others. This course felt like the perfect accelerant.

“I am honest enough to admit I want to take my career to new heights. This program offered the solid foundation I need to become a confident, successful leader. But it is not just about climbing the corporate ladder. The chance to develop the skills to launch my own business is incredibly exciting.

“Leadership and Management is not just a title; it is about achieving goals, big and small. This course aligns perfectly with my ambition, dedication, and desire to make a positive difference. I’m ready to learn, grow, and become the leader I know I can be.”

Michael said the course offered a “captivating blend of personal and professional growth.”

He said: “On one hand, it delves into fascinating topics, equipping me with the skills and knowledge to truly excel in my career. Exploring these ideas has been incredibly rewarding. But the true highlight, for me, is the supportive UWTSD community. From lecturers enthusiastic about student success to fellow students driven by ambition, it is a place where connections blossom. The friendships forged here are more than just classmates; they are a source of inspiration and a reminder that change, and success are possible for everyone.”

Michael said sharing stories with students from diverse backgrounds had been a privilege.

“Hearing their journeys and aspirations has solidified my belief that with dedication, anything is achievable. This programme isn’t just about textbooks and lectures; it’s about a supportive network that empowers you to become the best version of yourself.”

Michael said UWTSD has been instrumental in his development. He recently completed a six-week business start-up course and is currently applying for funding for a student-focused event through the university.

“It’s a testament to the University’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurial spirit,” he added.

But his time at UWTSD has not been without challenges.

“My biggest challenge was being diagnosed with prostate cancer right as I began the Level 4 Skills in the Workplace course. Anxiety, sadness, anger – the emotional rollercoaster was real. But amidst the fear and uncertainty, I found strength,” he said.

“Reaching out to a prostate cancer charity was a turning point. Their support, their kindness, truly saved my life. Now, cancer-free, I volunteer an hour a week, sharing my story and offering hope to others.

“In 2021, I even did a live speech at the Blue Orange Theatre in Birmingham! Telling my story in front of 150 people was empowering. It was a testament to the resilience I discovered within myself.

“This battle-built character, commitment, and a relentless focus. It showed me that anything is possible with self-belief and surrounding yourself with positive, forward-thinking people. That is my message to all mature students: education empowers you. You can do this, and so can I.

“I am energised by the possibilities ahead! I have now started an MBA in International Business Administration that has already equipped me with the skills and knowledge to pursue a variety of exciting paths.”

In the immediate future, Michael says he is sharpening his resume and exploring employment opportunities that leverage his newfound expertise.

“The academic mentor field in higher education is particularly intriguing, as it allows me to combine my passion for learning with guiding future generations.

“But my entrepreneurial spirit is also burning bright! Launching my business in 2025 is a concrete goal towards which I am actively working. The MBA has provided the roadmap, and I am determined to make it a success.

“Long-term, a PhD beckons. It represents a personal milestone, a testament to my dedication to growth and achievement.

“This journey is not linear; it is a strategic exploration. Whether I choose to dive into the workforce, build my business, or pursue further studies, I am confident that my MBA has positioned me for success. I am excited to see where the future unfolds!”
