Susan, a Developmentor and Assessor for The Coaching Centre in South Africa, embarked on her journey with UWTSD seeking to deepen her understanding of coaching, specifically in relation to Integral theory approaches to supporting people with anxiety through research. Her experience exemplifies the transformative power of self-directed learning and the unwavering support provided by UWTSD’s Professional Practice team. She said:

“I felt that I would be supported and guided both formally and informally through this process. This proved to be true, and I found the team to be patient, supportive, and helpful throughout the process of guiding me to understand how to research my topic correctly and thoroughly.”

Throughout her studies, Susan explored the intersection of Integral Theory and mental health care, focusing on innovative approaches to support individuals with anxiety. Her research has broadened her perspective, deepened her understanding, and reinforced her commitment to practicing new ways of supporting people through coaching. She adds:

“I have no doubt that obtaining the MA in Coaching and Mentoring award has deepened my understanding of coaching. Going forward, it will support me in sharing these practices with my colleagues, students, and clients.”

Susan’s experience at UWTSD has been transformative, thanks to the guidance and support from the Professional Practice team.

“My overall experience was positive. I received guidance, support, and advice whenever I needed it. The patient, positive attitudes of Sarah Loxdale and Lowri Harris were vital to my ability to complete this study. I was always encouraged to have ‘hope’ and I never felt alone.”

Looking ahead, Susan is excited to continue her research, seeking innovative ways to integrate these perspectives into her practice. She is eager to contribute to ongoing conversations and research efforts aimed at advancing the understanding of anxiety and enhancing support efforts for those affected by it.

“My journey through this thesis has been a transformative experience. It is my hope that the insights gained from this research will contribute to the body of knowledge of Integral approaches to support clients.”

Sarah Loxdale, Senior Lecturer at UWTSD, expressed her enthusiasm for Susan’s achievements, stating, “Susan’s dedication to her research and her commitment to advancing the understanding of coaching practices is truly inspiring. Her journey exemplifies the transformative potential of self-directed learning within our Professional Practice Framework.”

Lowri Harris, Programme Manager for the PPF, echoed these sentiments, adding, “We are immensely proud of Susan’s accomplishments and the impact of our Professional Practice Framework in facilitating such profound learning experiences. Susan’s journey exemplifies the ethos of UWTSD – empowering individuals to realise their full potential through innovative and self-directed learning.”

Susan encourages anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of their subject by working with peers in their field to undertake this powerful journey.

“Learning to enjoy the experience of synthesising, examining, comparing, and evaluating information has been the single most powerful tool I have learned. I am aware of how important this tool will be for me in both my personal and professional life going forward.”
